With Android 15, Google needs at least 32 GB storage for a smartphone that wants to pre -install its applications and services suits (this is commonly known as Google Mobile Services or GMS). It will have to dedicate at least 75% data partition of storage size, from 32GB, which stores preinstalled system applications, system application data, some system files and all user applications and files.
The previous limit was 16 GB, which was applied to Android 13, and before it was 8 GB. Note that phones with less than 32GB of storage, if it launches to the previous version may not be updated on Android 15.
Of course, there are still many devices there are 16GB or 32GB of storage, thankful, and don’t need to say, your experience using 32GB of storage phone would be terrifying, Android 15 or not. But it is interesting to see that Google has a real minimum storage size that applies to the devices that GMS wants.
The same goes for RAM. Devices with 2 GB and 3GB RAM must use Android Go Edition, which is designed for the version ultra-low-end phones, while people with less than 2 GB cannot get GMS. 4GB of RAM phones can still get GMS and run full Android 15, but start with Android 16, they will also have to go to the Android Go Route, that is, at least 6 GB of RAM will be effectively required to run the full Android.
Google also requires devices on Android 15 to give users the option of sharing their emergency contacts data with the system’s emergency location service during Emergency Calls. This is the feature that allows you to choose your emergency contacts with your location data when contacting emergency services. Thus it allows emergency services to reach your emergency contacts, and of course it can easily find you when you are in an emergency.
In order to protect your privacy, Google orders to disclose which information can be shared with emergency services. The company has also made it clear that emergency contact data sharing should be OPT pt-in.
