This week, I had the opportunity to spend a few days trying on the new Sony WH-1000xm6 over-ear noise-ridden headphones. I have been a fan of the eager range from the Wh-1000xm2 and have been withdrawing the XM5S for the last two years. I made a significant difference in XM4 to XM5 – lighter build, improved sound cancellation and better microphones. That’s why I am happy that Sony has stuck with the same design this year.
Sony also brought something back from past models – flexibility. The WH -1000xm6 is foldable hinges and fit in a more compact case. It is a practical upgrade for those who travel with their headphones and want to keep them safe. The case itself is attractive, compact and easier to open than a cumbersome zipper on a strange XM5 case. Inside, there is a standard 3.5 mm to a 3.5 mm cable and a short USB cable to charge.

Headphones are slightly heavier than XM5S (246 g) but still lighter than XM4s (251.6 g). Design and materials are similar to WH -1000xm5. Sony chose to change the shape of the power button in the round so it is difficult to mistake for a rectangular noise-rid/ambient mode button. Touch controls remain unchanged from the previous models.

The experience of listening is wonderful. Sony upgraded the noise-raid processor, and the active voice-raid (ANC) is once again the best in the industry. For most users, however, the ANC will look very similar to the XM5S; The improvement of jumping from XM4S to XM5S is not so significant. The experience of listening to music is also like a previous model. Sony’s Sound Connect app provides an equalizer and user -friendly “Find your equalizer” wizard to set up a custom sound for everyone.

Sony also added the “Listening Mode” feature to the Sound Connect app, which looks specific to the Wh-1000xm6. You can choose between “standard”, “background music” and “cinema”. “Background Music” adjusts the sound to imitate a distant environment like a living room or cafe. “Cinema” is to be used for video content and imitates a movie theater atmosphere, capable of Sony’s 360 reality Audio deo Apimix technology. This feature may not be a cup of tea for everyone, but I believe it can be helpful to people who work with headphones and want a calm atmosphere or a curious movie-waters.
The microphone and the Call l quality are usually my largest pet pives in the WH -1000xm series. I use headphones every day, so I make many phone calls while wearing them. People on the other side of the calls have been complaining for years that I am difficult to hear in a noisy environment. With the WH -1000xm5, Sony finally upgraded the microphone setup, including the eight -microphone array and the AI sound rejection algorithm. Even with the upgraded setup, the microphone is still left to be desired when used in a noisy atmosphere like a busy street. The initial microphone test at WH -1000xm6 shows similar results, though more complete testing is needed.
Even after a few days with them, I am sure that Sony WH -1000xm6 ANC lives in the best choices for over -ear headphones. They are lightweight and compact, providing excellent sound-rod and Audio deo quality for music. However, budget -saving buyers may be better than choosing the old WH -1000xm5 model. In my opinion any WH -1000xm4 or above will get their money by upgrading the cost of their money.
