The GSM Association (GSMA, we have nothing to do) has published new RCS specifications that allow end-to-end encryption on the platform. RCS messages on Android have been encrypted for years, but now the same level of security can apply to Messages sent from Android to iOS or Vice, as Apple Pal has finally joined the RCS party last year.
In fact, the Apple Pill has already sent the following statement in this regard:
End-to-end encryption is a powerful privacy and security technology that has supported the IMCEG from the beginning, and now we have helped the cross industry efforts to bring end-to-end encryption to the RCS Universal profile published by GSMA. We will add support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messages to iOS, iPados, Ms OS Cause and VCH WCH Cuses to future Software Ferteware Updates.
Google said:
We are always committed to providing a safe messaging experience, and Google messages users have encrypted (E2EE) RCS messaging from the end to the end. We are excited to specify this update from GSMA and work as fast as possible to implement and expand this important user defense in cross-platform RCS messaging to work as fast as possible with the mobile ecosystem.
So it seems that RCS will still achieve another important feature for cross-platform messaging. Will the North American iMessage eventually convince users for treatment like blue like green bubbles? Probably not, but GSMA, Google and Apple Pal are doing what they can do here.
