After its announcement to the CES earlier this year, the HDMI Forum has finally introduced the latest HDMI 2.2 speck for device and support manufacturers.
Like the previous major HDMI research, the main update with Version 2.2 is an increase in bandwidth. HDMI supports 2.2 96 Gbps bandwidth, twice the previously HDMI 2.1. However, this is the HDMI forum that we are talking about, and some dose of water is expected, so HDMI 2.2 will also apply to 64 Gbps, 80 Gbps and full 96 GBPS bandwidth.
As always, this is a resolution number to attract a big attention to going with a new spec. At this time, we are receiving support of up to 16K resolution at 120 Hz or 12K resolution at 120 Hz, using display stream compression or chroma subspling.
But when it is easier to turn your eyes on these figures, the larger bandwidth increase, like this, also improves with more practical resolutions. For example, with a recent launch of a 4K 240 Hz monitor, you can achieve this resolution and refreshing rate combination on 10-bit or 12-bit color, without the use of display stream compression or chroma subspling. Other features of the new spec include the Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), Dynamic HDR Support, Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM), Advanced ERC, VRR, OLM, and QFT, Quick Media Switching (QMS) and HDMI Cable Power.
To go with a new speck, the HDMI Forum has also announced a new standard for cables that will be necessary to achieve this bandwidth. The previous Ultra High Speed HDMI Standard HDMI 2.1 is used for transmission will no longer be enough, and you will need to find a new Ultra 96 HDMI branding on the cable to ensure consistency.
