Meta has decided to stop supporting WhatsApp on older Android phones. More specifically, devices over 10 years old are still running Android KitKat. Handset still running on OS or older version will not have access to WhatsApp from January 1, 2025.
The reason for discontinuing support is WhatsApp’s evolving features and functionality. Meta wants to implement more demanding features, AI functionality, etc. that require more sophisticated hardware. Here are most of the phones that are getting affected:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
Maybe some of you are still using those devices as burner phones, but if you’re still rocking one of them as a daily driver, you should find a way to backup all your WhatsApp data to a new device. Otherwise, all your media and chat history will be gone from WhatsApp after January 1, 2025.
Meta announced something similar for iPhones a few months ago, ending support for iPhones running iOS older than version 15.1. However, the company will maintain support for these handsets till May 2025.
