The Red Wings wrecked a six-game losing streak by punishing the Sabres 7-3 on Wednesday night. Patrick Kane put up a show from the ages, scoring twice and adding three assists in Detroit’s most fiery game of the season. But, the highlight of the night was the fight-clad third period. An astonishing 134 out of the total 150 minutes assigned to penalties were handed out in the third, which turned the rink into a haven for street hockey.
Alex Tuch vs. Michael Rasmussen – The Spark That Lit the Fire
The fireworks exploded when Alex Tuch of Buffalo and Detroit captain Michael Rasmussen went at it with eight minutes left in regulation. The fight was over in mere seconds; however, a storm of penalties started with the brawl.
A few moments later, another stoppage in play brought with it a messy little fight between J.T. Compher and Jordan Greenway, who were so furious with one another that both were tossed for major misconduct while Greenway was noticeably enraged walking off the ice.
Real good stuff started at 16:51, with nine more misconduct penalties being handed out. Among them was Simon Edvinsson of Detroit, who had originally been given just a roughing penalty when the referee theatrically announced, “All the other guys are going to have a misconduct.” By the time it settled down, Buffalo was left with only five guys on the bench. Signals for roughing were thrown at the last minute, also for Beck Malenstyn and Moritz Seider, thus capping a crazy evening.
And yet, it will be remembered for the fights in the third period. A victory was what Detroit needed at this stage for some missing morale, whereas Buffalo’s frustration lost all semblance of reason at the end. “There was a lot of emotion out there,” said Buffalo’s Tage Thompson afterward to reporters.”And we had a lot of frustration with how things had gone during the game.”

In the end, though, Detroit walked away with two points as the memory of this match would be the gloves on the ice and the tempers that blew up.
